Can Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘12th Fail’ Make It To The Prestigious Oscars?

 

 

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12th Fail Movie starring Vikrant Massey playing 'Manoj Kumar Sharma,' and Medha Shankar playing 'Shraddha Joshi’ has won the hearts of millions and it’s growing day by day. 

In November 2022, Chopra announced that Vikrant Massey would play the lead role in the film, making it the first time the two would work together. PSC coach Vikas Divyakirti played himself on screen, while many real-life aspirants were cast in various roles. Massey stated that including real-life aspirants added “authenticity” to the film. Both Sharma and Joshi made cameo appearances in the movie.

 

The 12th Fail Movie, featuring Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankar, has been included in the list of films being considered for the Oscar's Best Feature shortlist. The selection process for this category is highly competitive and considers several factors, such as the film's quality, critical reception, and the level of competition in the given year.

Producer Sheetal Talwar says, “I think it has the potential to make the cut – it’s a film that speaks our language, our aspirations, with our grammar and is reflective of the times. There are a couple more films that are on the list, including Tovino Thomas’ 2018 and their fate will be decided…”

Two more films have been added to the general entry list of the Oscars. One of them is based on the life of young nun Rani Maria Vattalil titled The Face of the Faceless, while the other is called Online Blues.

Oscar committee member Ujwal Nirgudkar says, “It is going to be tough, as our films will have to compete with 264 films that are from various parts of the
world. Big studios have their marketing, which may not be the case for Indian films.”

Many Bollywood celebrities have appreciated the movie. Actor Vicky Kaushal tagged Vikrant Massey in an appreciation post and wrote, “Jald hi milkar gale lagna hai (Will meet soon and hug you). Such an inspiring performance” with a string of heart emojis. For actress Medha Shankar, he wrote, “Absolutely brilliant!” and concluded his post with, “And my salute to the entire ensemble cast and all the technicians! What a film!”

 

Actress Alia Bhatt also wrote, “One of the most beautiful films I have seen in a while! With such fabulous performances.. Just too too too beautiful! Vikrant Massey, you were so so spectacular I am in awe! Medha Shankar heart and soul of Manoj's journey.. so special and fresh and all things heartwarming! Anantvijay outstanding! And lastly Vidhu Vinod Chopra sir - this film really hits the spot! So moving. So inspiring. So complete! I am full of love after watching this film! To the entire cast and crew! Take a bow.” Deepika Padukone re-shared Alia’s story with these words, “+1. I couldn't agree more. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew.”

The 12th Fail Movie is based on the real-life story of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma and IRS officer Shraddha Joshi. “IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma fearlessly embraces the idea of restarting his academic journey and reclaiming his destiny at a place where millions of students attempt the world's toughest competitive exam: UPSC” reads the film’s synopsis.
